The Youth Mental Health First Aid course is for those who support young individuals aged 8-18. It equips adults with skills to provide first aid, guide towards support, and create a supportive environment at home, school, or community. The two-day MHFAider® course covers different mental health issues in young people such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.
Course aims
- Preserve life where a young person may be a danger to themselves or others
- To provide help to prevent a mental health issue developing into a more serious state
- To promote the recovery of good mental health
- To provide comfort to a young person experiencing a mental health issue
- To raise awareness of mental health issues in the community.
- To reduce stigma and discrimination

- Risk factors for mental ill health
- Preventing mental health issues and promoting wellbeing.
- An action plan to support young people

Youth Mental Health First Aiders have:
- An in depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing
- Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
- Confidence to reassure and support a young person under 18 in distress
- Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
- Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support
- Ability to support a young person with a long-term mental health issue or disability, to thrive
- Tools to look after their own mental wellbeing
