The Youth Mental Health First Aid course is for those who support young individuals aged 8-18. It equips adults with skills to provide first aid, guide towards support, and create a supportive environment at home, school, or community. The two-day MHFAider® course covers different mental health issues in young people such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

Course aims

  • Preserve life where a young person may be a danger to themselves or others
  • To provide help to prevent a mental health issue developing into a more serious state
  • To promote the recovery of good mental health
  • To provide comfort to a young person experiencing a mental health issue
  • To raise awareness of mental health issues in the community.
  • To reduce stigma and discrimination

  • The problems that young people face, and how it can affect their mental health.
  • Mental health facts and figures
  • Risk factors for mental ill health
  • Preventing mental health issues and promoting wellbeing.
  • An action plan to support young people

Session 2

  •  The facts and figures about depression.
  • Signs and symptoms
  • Risk factors
  • Anxiety disorders, facts and figures
  • Signs and symptoms

Session 3

  • Suicide
  • Psychosis

Session 4

  • Self harm
  • Eating disorders

Youth Mental Health First Aiders have:

  • An in depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person under 18 in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support
  • Ability to support a young person with a long-term mental health issue or disability, to thrive
  • Tools to look after their own mental wellbeing
